Insights and Opportunities from Europe
Abstract
Integrative pediatrics (IP) combines conventional, evidence-based medicine with complementary approaches, lifestyle interventions, and psychosocial care to support children’s health and resilience. Across Europe and Israel, IP is increasingly recognized as a response to rising chronic disease, parental demand for holistic care, and the need to strengthen child and family well-being.
Implementation varies between the 27 countries according to cultural and systemic factors. In Germany and Switzerland, IP is increasingly embedded in academic children’s hospitals with structured programs and research agendas. Southern European countries, such as Italy and Spain, emphasize clinical practices like acupuncture, massage, and yoga. The Netherlands and the UK-focus on lifestyle medicine, psychosocial interventions, and integrative oncology, while Israel pioneers hospital-based integration, including inpatient acupuncture programs. Nordic countries highlight holistic, patient-centered care with mind-body interventions.
Common themes include strong parental interest, clinical champion and the need for structured training and guidelines. Key differences lie in the balance between research-driven integration, pragmatic clinical implementation, and lifestyle-oriented models.
This presentation provides a comparative overview of European and Israeli experiences in IP, highlighting shared challenges—such as reimbursement, education, and regulation—and unique national pathways. These insights can guide cross-border collaboration the potential for european and global guidelines and and sustainable models of integrative pediatrics.
