Aromatherapy in Maternity Care: Benefits and Risks
Abstract
Pregnancy, birth and early parenthood is one of the most prolific periods for the use of complementary therapies and aromatherapy is the most popular of all therapies. Midwives around the world are keen to incorporate essential oils into their care of expectant mothers, and it is vital that they have a basic knowledge of the benefits and potential risks of self-administration in pregnancy and labour.
In this presentation, Denise explores the rise in interest in aromatherapy, amongst both parents and professionals, and raises specific issues related to using essential oils in maternity unit settings. She will address the education and clinical practice of midwives, birth workers and aromatherapists working with women at this time, and consider the calibre of the evidence on maternity aromatherapy, especially when used in the context of a high litigation area of medical care.
