Ayurvedic Approaches to Sarcopenia: An Integrative of Traditional Strategies and Scientific Evidence
Abstract
Sarcopenia, due to its increasing prevalence among the elderly and its negative impact on quality of life, requires effective and safe therapeutic strategies. Ayurvedic medicine, with its holistic and preventive approach, emerges as a promising complementary alternative for managing this condition.
By understanding Sarcopenia as an imbalance of the Vata Dosha and a deficiency of the muscle tissue (Mamsa Dhatu), Ayurveda proposes interventions that go beyond symptomatic relief, aiming to restore overall bodily balance. Practices such as Panchakarma, the use of Rasayanas (rejuvenating herbs), daily routines (Dinacharya), combined with Yoga, Pranayama, and an appropriate diet, show potential to strengthen muscles, enhance vitality, and slow the effects of aging.
Although much of the scientific evidence is still in the early stages, especially regarding human clinical trials, there are positive indications regarding the efficacy of several of these practices in supporting muscle health. Furthermore, Ayurveda’s emphasis on prevention and self-care provides additional benefits by promoting active and healthy aging.
In conclusion, integrating Ayurvedic principles into geriatric care can offer a valuable complementary approach to preventing and treating sarcopenia. Continued investment in clinical research and dialogue between traditional and scientific knowledge are essential to consolidating these practices as part of integrative strategies for elderly health care.
