Developing Thematic Pages for the WHO Traditional Medicine Global Library: Strategy, Collaboration, and Best Practices
Abstract
The development of thematic pages within the WHO Traditional Medicine Global Library (TMGL) represents a strategic effort of the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre and BIREME to provide structured, inclusive, and culturally respectful access to knowledge on Traditional, Complementary, and Integrative Medicine (TCIM). Designed as valuable gateways, these pages aim to serve a diverse global audience, including researchers, practitioners, policymakers, educators, and community knowledge holders, by offering curated collections that support intercultural dialogue, knowledge integration, and evidence-informed health system strengthening.
By consolidating scientific literature, educational materials, regulatory frameworks, and institutional resources, the TMGL thematic pages foster visibility, facilitate collaboration, and promote the systematic articulation of TCIM into public health agendas. The first model, focused on Traditional Midwifery in the Region of the Americas, a cocreation with the Equity Gender Human Rights and Cultural Diversity (DHE) department PAHO has already been implemented and continues to evolve. It offers a dynamic, culturally sensitive, and user-friendly interface that reflects the richness of local practices, ancestral wisdom, and scientific inquiry.
Building on this foundational experience, TMGL is expanding the model to encompass additional knowledge systems. The Ayurveda thematic page, currently under development in collaboration with the Institute for Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA) and BIREME/PAHO/WHO, will provide access to indexed publications, specialized journals, theses, multimedia content, and policy documents, while contextualizing the historical and cultural contributions of Ayurveda to global health.
This scalable framework is now guiding the creation of additional pages on anthroposophical medicine, integrative oncology, and integrative pediatrics. This initiative demonstrates how TMGL thematic pages can serve as collaborative platforms for scientific validation, equitable access to knowledge, and global policy dialogue, advancing the integration of diverse medical rationalities in support of holistic and inclusive health systems.
